Series Premiere Review: HBO's 'The Leftovers'

'The Leftovers'... Anyone else disappointed and totally mind-f*cked?!

...Some people actually disappeared... Some went crazy and joined a group that practices silent communication, chain smokes, dons all white (all the time), eats slop and harasses those still in mourning and wonderment over what exactly happened to those that disappeared... Domestic dogs whose owners disappeared have reverted to their feral roots and created a ferocious, ownerless pack...

I'm just like... who chose one of the greatest, calming songs of all time to hype us up about this damn show?!!! ("Retrograde" by James Blake-check out the vid below)

..If only the premiere was as great as the marketing..

I was sooo excited for this premiere.  So excited. After watching this I lost about 1 hour and 15 minutes of life and gained a damn headache!

But I have faith in HBO (thanks to 'Girls', 'Game of Thrones', The Sopranos', 'The Wire', 'Veep', 'Hello Ladies', etc.) so I shall tune in over the next few weeks.  I'm giving this show till the 3rd episode to reverse the ill feelings this premiere threw on me.

Bride-To-Be Killed In Car Crash En Route To Her Bachelorette Party

Collette Moreno was a beaming 26-year-old looking forward to her upcoming wedding in Jamaica when her life ended on a two-lane street as she and her best friend attempted to reach her bachelorette party.

From Huffington Post:

A weekend bachelorette party in Missouri ended before it began when the bride-to-be was killed in a tragic car accident, just minutes after snapping a selfie with her best friend, police said.
The accident occurred Friday, when Collette Moreno and Ashley Theobald, both 26, were driving to the Lake of the Ozarks for Moreno's bachelorette party.
Theobald was driving a 2013 Chevy Malibu on Missouri Highway 5, when she attempted to pass another vehicle on the two-lane road, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
In an interview with Kansas City's WDAF-TV, Theobald said she was passing a semi-truck because it was emitting a lot of exhaust fumes, which were causing Moreno to cough.
"She has really bad asthma … and she was coughing, so I was like, 'OK, we have to pass,'" Theobald told WDAF.
It was while passing, police say, that a man driving a 1999 Dodge Ram pickup from the opposite direction came over the crest of a hill and struck the passenger side of the Malibu, sending the car veering off the left side of the road.
Theobald, who was not only Moreno's best friend, but also her maid of honor, sustained only minor injuries from the crash. She initially thought Moreno would also be OK.
"I was talking to her," Theobald said. "She couldn't talk back but she was nodding at me. I didn't know it was as bad as it was because she wasn't physically super beaten-up."
Melvin Garber, the 25-year-old driver of the pickup, was not seriously injured in the crash, police said.
Theobald was transported to a local hospital where she was treated and released.
Moreno, who was wearing her seat belt, was not as lucky.
Emergency responders transported the young woman to University Hospital in Columbia, where she was pronounced dead. A cause of death has not yet been released.
Just eight minutes before the crash, Moreno took a selfie of the two women in the Malibu as they traveled to the bachelorette party. The magic moment is now a tragic memento for those she left behind.
According to theMissouri Highway Patrol, Theobald faces charges of careless and imprudent driving.
Moreno and her fiance, Jesse Arcobasso, 28, had been engaged since last year, according to WPEC-TV. Moreno worked at a doctor's office and was the mother of a 5-year-old boy, whose father reportedly lives in the Kansas City area.
"He doesn't quite understand everything just yet," Arcobasso told WPEC of Moreno's son. "I know it's going to take time."
Moreno and Arcobasso were to be married next month in Jamaica. Instead, friends and relatives who had helped arrange her wedding are now preparing for her funeral.
"Complete shock. It wasn't real," Moreno's mother, Kelly Arie, told KDVR.comMonday, as she recalled hearing the news. "It felt like a messed-up dream and I needed to wake up from it and I just couldn't believe it. I still can't."
website has been created to collect funds to pay for Moreno's funeral and related expenses. Donations can also be made to the Collette Moreno-Arcobasso Memorial Fund at Bank of the West, 229 SE Topaz Dr., Lee's Summit, MO 64063.

Man Accused of Burglary Killed The Same Day A "Confused" Jury Accidentally Rendered Him A Non-Guilty Verdict

Bobby Lee Pearson, of Fresno, California, recently stood trial as a co-defendant in a burglary case.  While the other man accused of the crime received a guilty verdict and time for the offense, Pearson walked out of the courthouse a free man due to a jury error: A non-guilty form was signed instead of a guilty form.

Tragically, mere hours following his release,  the boyfriend of Pearson's sister stabbed him to death.

From New York Post:

FRESNO, Calif. — A defendant in a Central California burglary case walked out of a courtroom a free man after a jury mistakenly signed a not-guilty verdict form — only to be killed hours later.
The flabbergasted judge said Wednesday that he had no choice but to order defendant Bobby Lee Pearson to be released from jail because the not-guilty verdict had been put on the record, The Fresno Bee reported
After it was too late, jurors told the judge they were hung on the charges against Pearson. Prosecutors might have had an opportunity to retry Pearson in the case of a hung jury.
“I can’t believe it,” Superior Court Judge W. Kent Hamlin said after he ordered Pearson to be set free.
Hours later, Pearson was stabbed to death after going to a home to get some clothing and belongings, Fresno police Sgt. James Rios said. He apparently got into a fight early Thursday with his sister’s boyfriend, who Rios says then stabbed him.
The two apparently had a long history of problems. The boyfriend’s name has not been released.
Hamlin said Wednesday that he couldn’t change the verdict form because double jeopardy was already attached.
“This has never happened to me in more than 100 jury trials that I have done,” he said.
Pearson and two co-defendants were accused of burglarizing an apartment last year and stealing a video system and a gun. The homeowner allegedly caught the intruders and wrestled with one of them.
Jurors returned a guilty verdict against Pearson’s co-defendant, Terrel Minniweather, and the mistaken not guilty verdict against Pearson before lunch Wednesday.
Hamlin asked the jury whether that was in fact its verdict against Pearson, and all 12 nodded yes, the Bee reported.
The jurors were then asked to return after lunch for a potential second phase of the trial. The confusion over the verdict against Pearson came to light during lunch, when one juror told court staff that he had voted to find Pearson guilty, said Linden Lindahl, an attorney for Minniweather.
Jurors said they were confused by the forms, one of which was for a guilty verdict and the other for a not guilty verdict.
One juror said there was no form they could sign that indicated the jury was deadlocked.
Lindahl said he was surprised by the jury’s confusion, since the judge “did everything by the book.”

Waffle House Waitress Once Denied Her $1,000 Tip Left on a Credit Card Finally Receives Tip via Personal Check Directly From the Patron

A hardworking, single mother of three and employee of two (different) employers recently fought hard with one of her employers to receive a $1,000 tip a patron gave her.

From Today.com:

Shaina Brown, a 26-year-old Waffle House waitress and a single mom, had to hold back from screaming with joy when a Good Samaritan left her a $1,000 tip on Mother’s Day.

Then, in the weeks that followed, she had to hold back from screaming in frustration when Waffle House wouldn’t let her keep the money because of the restaurant chain's policy about large tips.

Her disappointment continued for nearly a month until the generous tipper got wind of the situation and came through for her a second time — this time via a personal check for $1,000 made out directly to Brown. In the wake of the flap, Waffle House issued a statement on Tuesday afternoon apologizing for the incident and saying that it will be reviewing its tipping procedures in order to “get tips to our associates quicker in these unusual situation(s).”

The saga began when Brown was working a 10-hour night shift at a Waffle House in Raleigh, North Carolina. A customer came into the restaurant with some friends late on May 11, and he got to chatting with Brown. He was impressed and moved by her story.

“I told him I was a single parent, three children, working two jobs, going to school, doing what I have to do,” Brown told TODAY.com. “And he told me, ‘Shaina, I’m going to bless you tonight.’ At first I didn’t get the weight of the statement. I thought he was joking around.”

But it was no joke: When the man used his credit card to pay his bill, he added in a tip for $1,500. He told Brown that $1,000 was meant for her and $500 was for another woman in the restaurant who seemed like she could use a boost.

“I didn’t shout for joy right then because I didn’t want to seem all dorky,” Brown said. “But I did after he left!”

The elation carried her through the night, until her manager arrived at work at 7 the next morning at the end of her shift. Then came the crash landing: After working at Waffle House for more than seven years, Brown learned for the first time that the chain routinely refunds generous tips left with credit cards in case customers later decide to dispute the amount.

For Brown, who had been thrilled that she could get her car’s transmission fixed and stop relying on her mom for rides to work, the news was devastating. As days passed and she realized she wasn’t getting anywhere with Waffle House, she contacted Josh Shaffer, a columnist for the News & Observer in Raleigh.

“She was righteously indignant,” Shaffer told TODAY.com. “She felt she had been wronged.”
Shaffer wrote a column about the incident, suggesting that “everybody visit the Hillsborough Street Waffle House on Thursday, Friday or Saturday night and specifically request Shaina Brown’s table. Bring cash. Write her name on the bills. And don’t let management take it.”
The story soon started spreading across the country, and the tipper — who has insisted on remaining anonymous — tried contacting Waffle House, to no avail. So, with the columnist’s help, the tipper managed to connect with Brown directly and give her a check for $1,000 on June 6.

“She was nice and she was working so hard,” the tipper told TODAY.com about the night he met Brown. “I thought, ‘I’m going to make this young lady’s day.’ ...“It was a completely impromptu thing. I walked out of the place smiling and feeling good, and she was jumping up and down behind the counter!”

Brown called the man a hero. The mom of three kids — ages 9, 7 and 1 — works 58 hours a week: 40 at Waffle House, and 18 at a county library administration building. She’s also taking online classes at Wake Technical Community College, and she dreams of becoming an English teacher. Right now she lives with her mother, who watches her children while she works her 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. restaurant shifts.

Waffle House posted its statement about its tipping policy on its Facebook page.
“This has given us cause to review our procedures so we can get tips to our associates quicker in these unusual situation(s),” the statement reads.

“It says a lot about this customer that he was willing to tip our associate this generous amount. Our intentions were for the associate to get her tip all along. We are sorry that our associate and the customer are having to go through this.”

Kudos to her for not taking this laying down!  And to the patron for coming back in to make sure she received what was meant for her.

Shame on Waffle House for their large tip receipt practices.  I understand that credit card transactions aren't as stable as cash.  I agree with the company waiting "x" amount of time before giving the server the entire tip amount.  Maybe a week or two, but to simply return the tip and say, "Forget it", to someone that is struggling and gives so much of HER time to their business is absolutely ridiculous!  And of course they want to change their story once it receives nationwide attention, and say their intent was always to get the $1,000 to Ms. Brown....  Just shameful.

Love & Hip Hop Atlanta's Stevie J Arrested For Non-Payment of Child Support to the Tune of $1 Million!!

Some good ole Georgian citizens captured video (and sold it to TMZ) of Love & Hip Hop Atlanta's Stevie J taking a long walk of shame from his mansion's front door and down his driveway to an awaiting police vehicle.

According to TMZ he owes over $1 million in back child support for 2 children born in 1997 and 1998.

Here's what landed Stevie J behind bars.  He and his live-in GF had a kid in '97 and '98.  In '99 Stevie was ordered to pay around $6,600 a month in child support, which eventually was raised to $8500K.
According to the criminal complaint, Stevie J stopped paying in 2001 -- he's never paid a cent since then.  So now the tab is a whopping $1,107,412.
Cops nabbed Stevie J in Georgia (check out the video).  He'll probably bail out soon but then has to face criminal charges in NYC.

Tracy Morgan Involved In Severe Car Crash

In the early morning hours of yesterday, Actor/Comedian, Tracy Morgan was traveling in a limo bus on the New Jersey turnpike when it was struck from behind by a tractor trailer, killing one and leaving Morgan and others in critical condition.

From Huffington Post:

Actor and comedian Tracy Morgan was in critical condition Saturday after a limo bus he was riding in crashed on the New Jersey Turnpike, according to multiple reports. At least one person was killed, and two other passengers were also in critical condition.
The limo bus, which was carrying Morgan and six others, overturned at around 1 a.m. Saturday morning near Cranbury Township, Sgt. First Class Greg Williams of the New Jersey State Police told The Associated Press. The accident involved six vehicles, including two tractor trailers and an SUV.
One of the tractor trailers crashed into the limo bus, state police told The New York Times. The driver of the truck didn't notice that traffic ahead of him had slowed until it was too late, police told ABC News. The truck hit the limo bus from behind, sending it crashing into other vehicles before tipping over on its side, ABC reported. The Associated Press reports that the truck driver involved in the incident has been charged with causing the crash.
James McNair, one of Morgan's comedy writers who was also riding in the limo bus, was killed. He was 62.
Comedian Ardie Fuqua Jr. and Morgan's assistant, Jeffrey Millea, were both in critical condition, a hospital spokesperson told the AP
The Associate Press reports that the truck driver has been charged with causing the accident. Police identified the truck driver as Kevin Roper, 35, of Jonesboro, Georgia, according to The New York Times. The charges include one count of death by auto and four counts of assault by auto, according to authorities. Roper's bail was set at $50,000, and he is expected to surrender to authorities on Saturday.
In a statement, Walmart President Bill Simon said that a Walmart truck was involved in the crash and that the company "will take full responsibility" if it is determined that the Walmart truck caused the accident.

Dame Dash Addresses His Issue with Hip Hop "Culture Vultures", Smacking Steve Stoute and Running Multiple Businesses on The Combat Jack Show [Audio]

What Dame's first appearance on The Combat Jack Show did for my newfound like for him; this latest appearance just about equally did for my dislike of him.

Prior to his first interview with Combat Jack, I viewed him as Jay-Z's arrogant and super obnoxious right-hand(while that lasted).  But that interview revealed him to me as a true thinker, visionary and fighter.  Oftentimes the latter was for others that couldn't or simply wouldn't fight for themselves.  I respected his logic a great deal.  But on this latest interview this happened:

Combat Jack tells him that someone told him Dame has staffs full of unpaid interns; after Dame boasted of always having staff(s), even during times when folks were claiming him to be "broke".  Dame's response was that is "hearsay"and he's not responding.  However, he'll respond to the general hearsay that he is broke with vehement denials and "proof" to rebut these claims.  If it's true that he's not stunting off the work of the unpaid, and he got the money to keep businesses afloat, including paying the staff, why not speak on it?

..This, along with a few other comments and answers throughout the interview, that exceeds 2 hours in length, conjured my initial thoughts on Dash.

But then he turns around and says things like, you cannot expect people from different walks of life or experiences to fully understand and/or respect the other's ideas and way of doing things.  And that's the logic I respect from him.  To those that have this understanding already, it's not profound in the least. However, you must be aware of the number of people that never realized this and after hearing it, still may not understand the concept.  But if Dame got that fundamental point through to even just one listener, he deserves credit.  I appreciate his articulation.  I don't appreciate his "bully" and (character) contradictions.

Check out his latest sit-down with Combat Jack and crew to hear about how he smacked the piss out of Steve Stoute and his thoughts on Funkmaster Flex, Lyor Cohen and Russell Simmons (among others).

When A Woman's Fed Up(But Not Really): Video of Lady Letting Her Dirty Dog Man Know What It Is

Rollin' through my Twitter Feed, I came across a tweet from Funky Dineva with a link to the video below.

Basically, this lady created a vid (and I guess shared it with the web) to let her boo know she done with his 32-year-old, livin' with mama, broke as a joke, ho'ing ass!

This vid has its funny moments, but I really wonder: "ARE YOU DONE FORREAL DOE, MA'AM??" *serious side eye**

I believe that if she was, she wouldn't even waste her time on attempting to humiliate him aka GETTIN' HIS ATTENTION. My money is on the fact that she'll be laughing about this video with the dude she talkin' 'bout in about.. less than a day from now.  (Or as soon as he gets bored with the other chicks and needs somewhere to lay his head and eat at besides mama's house.)

Who else want to know how this man look, though??? I do! This story ain't even complete without a pic.

I HAVE FOUND THE FOUNDATION FOR ME!!: A Review of MAC vs. NARS

NARS products picture is my own. I do not claim credit for the picture of the MAC product.

Though I have needed foundation (and concealer) for all of my life (hereditary dark eye circles and the ever-present blemish somewhere on my face), I just began using it about a year ago.  I began out very light on the wallet with Loreal compacts.  I didn't use this makeup for everyday wear.  It was used for certain occasions and weekends mostly.  However, I wasn't totally satisfied with the outcome, though I believe the outcome was quite bearable.

Several months ago I began researching foundations for African-Americans and found a countless number of Youtube videos and reviews raving about MAC foundation.   I came across many pictures and videos of brown skin women, such as myself, that had great results with this product.  So, I visited my local counter and purchased a bottle of NW47-ProLong Wear after an in-store consultation.  In the store's lighting the foundation looked a tad "off", but I couldn't quite put my finger on it.  I decided to reapply on my own at home with my own brushes and concealer and blush, brows filled in, etc. to see if the results were different.

Once I reapplied on my own with the full facial works, IT WAS HORRIBLE!! Even worse than the in-store application results.  The makeup was yellow as hell!!  I looked vampire-esque.  It was just... really BAD!.. I even tried dusting a dark powder (also from MAC) over this foundation.  The end result was a matte finish of a light brown color that was definitely no match for my true skin tone.  Like a milky espresso.

I went back to researching on Youtube for alternatives (Yes. The very source that led me astray in the first damn place.).  I found a dark brown lady that said she uses NC50 now after using one of the NW colors for a long time and found that the NC color works much better.  In the video she looked okay, so I decided to give that a try along with MAC's Match Master in 8.0; the latter as a sample.

Neither of these worked either.  I think Match Master may have worked in a darker tone, but I was just too through with MAC.  The NC50 left me just as yellow as the NW47 did.  And I came to the conclusion that MAC's foundations; though highly coveted by many makeup lovers of all skin tones, is simply NOT for me!

And I once again relied on Youtube for answers.  Luckily for me, the third time was the charm.  I found only about 3-4 videos of African-American, dark brown girls reviewing NARS products.  Much like the MAC reviews, the results looked good on these girls, but there was something about these products that made me think they were different...  and I gave NARS a try.

There are no retailers in my immediate area that sell NARS products, so I had to order directly from NarsCosmetics.com.  And even though I was not able to try the products out before shelling over about $90, what I purchased is right on the money!!

NARS gives great descriptions on their products.  For instance, I recall seeing "Chocolate" and "Gold" undertones mentioned in a few.  This really helped me with my purchase.  I knew that I definitely wanted to stay away from anything that had a yellow-y undertone, no matter what the color appears to be of the product inside of the bottle.  You know.. I've had more than my fair share on dealing with that makeup nightmare.

I decided on a tinted moisturizer in Polynesia (Dark 1) and the Sheer Glow foundation in Benares (Dark 3).  Both were about between $42-$45 each.  In total I paid about $90 (including tax and free shipping) and they threw in a free blush sample.  I'm in love with all 3 products!!  See the pictures below of the MAC foundations and the NARS product to see why:

MAC NC50-Not too bad without the flash

MAC NW47-light, powdery look

MAC MatchMaster 8.0--too light

MAC Match Master 8.0

MAC Match Master 8.0 with camera flash

MAC NC50 w/flash: YELLOW

MAC NW 47 in natural light

NARS Benares in natural light

Nars Benares

MAC products seem to have an "okay" look on me as long as I stay away from camera flashes.  The NC50 and NW47 don't look too bad without a bright light around.  But, who wants to walk around in the shadows all damn day long?? (Not I!)  The NARS products give me brown all the way through. I do not have a picture of the tinted moisturizer in Polynesia, but it gives pretty much the same look as the Benares foundation.  I apply the foundation with a brush and the moisturizer with my fingers.  I apply the moisturizer as... a moisturizer.  A few dabs all around the face and rub it in.  So, the moisturizer has less coverage than the foundation, but it gives me an even tone and covers what it needs to cover.  AND IN THE CORRECT SHADE!!

On another note, MAC actually has a great return policy: Original box, 50%+ of the product remaining and receipt... Full refund within a lot of days.  I think the lady told me 90 days, but I could be wrong.  I know that it took me about 2 weeks to return the NW47 and about one week to return the NC50.  I experienced no hassle with that.  So, that was cool.  The foundation... Not so much (for me, personally.)
